Purpose:

Purpose:
The Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Department at Santa Clara University (SCU), a
Jesuit Catholic University located in the heart of California's Silicon Valley, seeks a tenure-track faculty
member in the area of geotechnical engineering at the assistant professor level to begin in Fall 2025. SCU
embraces a teaching-scholar model for its full-time faculty and as a result there is an emphasis on both
exceptional teaching and strong research.

Responsibilities:
We seek an enthusiastic educator with expertise in geotechnical engineering, with research area(s) that
may include, soil dynamics and seismic response of earth structures; geohazard assessment; geostatistics,
geoinformatics, and computational geotechnical engineering; geoenvironmental engineering; landfill
design and performance; ground improvement; soil-structure interaction; and energy geotechnics.
The successful candidate will have an enthusiasm for teaching and a commitment to taking advantage of
SCU's many resources for improving teaching. Specific classes to be taught include lecture and lab
courses in geotechnical engineering and geology at the undergraduate level, as well as advanced courses
in their areas of expertise at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate may be asked to teach
undergraduate mechanics, graphical communication, and other courses depending on departmental needs.
In addition, the candidate will be expected to develop an active and independent research program, and
involve undergraduate and graduate students in their research. We strive to educate students who will
apply their design and analysis skills to promote a built environment that minimizes adverse impacts on
the environment and is resilient to changes, advancing the common good. All faculty are expected to
engage in the Department, University, professional, and/or community service.

with other researchers at neighboring educational institutions, governmental laboratories and agencies,
non-profit institutions, and private companies.

Qualifications:
An earned Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or equivalent by the time of employment in an area related to
geotechnical engineering
A passion for excellence in teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and graduate levels
A vigorous commitment to development of a productive and independent research program
An enthusiastic commitment to contributing to an academic culture that is inclusive of a diverse
population of students, faculty and staff
Expressed desire to engage the broader community on and outside campus
Experience in undergraduate instruction and curriculum development
Motivation to pursue professional engineering licensure (PE or GE)
Relevant professional experience considered a plus
