Department Information

Within this setting, the college has several research focus areas, including an area focused on Infrastructure, Sustainable Communities, Digital Construction, and Clean Water, in which the CEC department will play a critical role. In addition, the department is critical to developing talented future Georgia construction leaders in state's booming construction industry.

The Civil Engineering & Construction (CEC) department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Civil Engineering (BSCE), Construction Engineering (BSConE), and Construction (BSCons). The BSCE and BSConE programs are accredited by ABET, and the BSCons program is accredited by ACCE. The curriculum for each program emphasizes hands-on and experiential learning, where students develop practical skills that employers value. State-of-the-art equipment/instrumentation and advanced software are employed in both classroom and laboratory/field settings to prepare students to be productive technical professionals when they graduate.

The department offers graduate degrees, including a Master of Science in Civil Engineering and, starting Fall 2024, a college-wide PhD in Engineering. Disciplines emphasized in the Ph.D. program relevant to the CEC department include areas such as environmental engineering, structural dynamics, advanced engineering economy, and advanced quality control. The CEC department chair will be integral to the process of establishing and growing both the undergraduate and graduate programs and research agenda to their full potential, as well as engaging alumni, industry, and federal/state organizations. The department needs a leader who can guide new faculty in research and help build a state-wide leader in construction-related education.

Job Summary

Reporting to the dean, the chair will provide leadership for the teaching, scholarship, and service missions of the department on the Statesboro campus. The chair will advance a culture of academic excellence where distinction in teaching, research, and service is expected and rewarded. The chair will provide leadership for undergraduate and graduate curriculum development, assessment of student learning, accreditation, research programs, and initiatives that further the department and College strategic plans. The chair will also be responsible for departmental resource management, such as budgeting, purchasing, and academic scheduling. The chair will represent the department within the University community as well as maintain contacts with industry, alumni, and external stakeholders. The chair will be an active teacher-scholar in the department and participate in service. The position is a 12-month appointment and requires a terminal degree.
