Job Summary

The Department of Public Safety with CU Boulder is currently accepting applications for a UAS Instructor & Engineer! This position reports to the Director of Flight Operations, and will play a critical role in managing UAS flight operations at the University of Colorado. You will lead training and certification efforts for UAS pilots, facilitate operational deployments, and be responsible for the design of innovative UAS platforms. The role involves managing student employees, public safety operations, and ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks.

The department certifies and trains pilots to operate under FAA Certificates of Waiver or Authorization (COAs), providing operational support both locally and globally. Our services include mission planning, UAS design, airspace access, pilot services, and training programs for diverse UAS missions.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

UAS Training & Certification
  • Lead the University of Colorado UAS Ground School and other educational programs.
  • Conduct hands-on UAS training and testing events for pilot certification.
  • Maintain accurate training records and certifications through Alaris Pro UAS Management Software.
  • Conduct pilot checkrides to certify compliance with regulatory and University standards.
Flight Operations Management
  • Support University-wide UAS operations, ensuring compliance with FAA rules and University policies.
  • Manage field deployments of UAS for various research initiatives, including those in foreign countries.
  • Assist with the management of public safety UAS flight operations.
UAS Design & Development
  • Collaborate on the design and engineering of innovative UAS platforms for diverse missions.
  • Provide technical insights to improve system functionality and mission performance.
Team & Project Leadership
  • Supervise and mentor student employees involved in UAS operations and projects.
  • Manage multiple UAS-related projects, coordinating with FAA, external partners, and campus partners.
Field Deployment & Research
  • Assist with deployment of UAS for research programs, supporting international missions as needed.
  • Collaborate with research teams to ensure that UAS platforms meet mission objectives.


What You Should Know

Anticipated schedule Monday-Friday 8-5 some weekends.
Operates University Vehicles, requires driver's license.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $120,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field Equivalent combination of education and experience UAS design and operations may substitute.
  • One year of related experience in aerospace engineering or related field.


What You Will Need

  • UAS Pilot Training & Certification: Solid understanding of UAS platforms and training methodologies. Ability to teach and examine pilots on various UAS categories, ensuring compliance with FAA regulations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: In-depth knowledge of FAA rules for UAS operations, including experience with FAA Part 107 certification, COAs, and UAS waivers.
  • Project Management: Proven track record to oversee multiple projects, including UAS design and field deployment operations.
  • Communication & Leadership: Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively, both in written and verbal form. Strong leadership skills in developing teams, including student employees.
  • Technical Proficiency: Expertise in UAS systems, engineering, and software, as well as proficiency with tools like Alaris Pro UAS Management Software for maintaining records.
