Description:
The Caruth Institute for Engineering Education at SMU's Lyle School of Engineering invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow. We are seeking a highly motivated scholar with a strong background in engineering education, learning sciences, educational technology, or a related field. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for interdisciplinary research, a commitment to educational innovation, and a desire to contribute to preparing the next generation of engineers. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work closely with the Executive Director of the Caruth Center.
Research Focus Areas
Research focus areas include, but are not limited to:
- STEM learning, engagement, and motivation through AI-enhanced learning environments;
- Community-engaged engineering education, including research on service-learning models such as EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service), and their impact on student learning, identity, and engagement;
- Cognitive and social mechanisms of learning in engineering contexts;
- Human-AI collaborative systems for supporting teaching and instructional practices;
- Quasi-experimental studies conducted in authentic (in-vivo) engineering learning environments.
Position Responsibilities
Research
- Conduct independent and collaborative research following best practices and high ethical standards.
- Support research project administration and coordination tasks as needed.
- Disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at academic conferences.
Teaching, Learning, and Mentoring
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students involved in research projects.
- Contribute to the intellectual and professional development of junior researchers in the Center.
- Participate in teaching or teaching-related professional development opportunities aligned with career goals.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- A Ph.D. in Engineering Education, STEM Education, Learning Sciences, Educational Technology, Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field (by the time of appointment).
- A strong track record in educational research methods.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage research projects in interdisciplinary settings.
- Experience mentoring students or early-career researchers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Evidence of self-motivation and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

- Three letters of recommendation. Letters should address your disciplinary expertise, research skills, and experience in educational contexts.
The position is a full-time, 12-month appointment. The initial term is two years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance. The preferred start date is Fall 2025, though it is flexible.
